Anthony Rudd: "'Expression, Narrative and Selfhood"
Lecture by Anthony Rudd, Department of Philosophy, St. Olaf's College, Northfield, USA.
Anthony Rudd is the author of Kierkegaard and the Limits of the Ethical (1993) and Expressing the World: Skepticism, Wittgenstein and Heidegger (2003). He is currently working on a book on Personal Identity.
In this paper he argues that, although the Self cannot be defined in terms of a prior notion of narrative, a narrative understanding of the Self needs to be part of a robustly non-reductive account of Selfhood. In this context he discusses critical assessments of narrative theory by Ricoeur and Zahavi.
