Title: Visual Presence and the look of happiness

Abstract: I propose a phenomenological constraint on our visual awareness of others’ emotional expressions. After rejecting one picture of such awareness, I argue that what is required is a distinction between the basic and non-basic ways people, and other things, look. I offer an account of non-basic looks, defending it against a number of objections.
