Jesse Prinz: "Against the Phenomenal I: Towards a Selfless Theory of Consciousness"
Short abstract:
It is widely assumed that there is some sense of self present in at least some of our conscious experiences. This idea has deep philosophical roots, and has recently come under scientific scrutiny. Several theories of the phenomenal self have been advanced on the basis of findings in cognitive neuroscience and related fields. This paper is a critical survey of those theories and a defense of the Humean view that there is no self given in experience.
